Davis Drops Hammer on Reno
Saturday January 21, 2008

UC Davis beat UN Reno 44 to 12 on Saturday to improve their league record to 3 and 0. This game was a rematch of the Aggies first game of the season in which they beat UN Reno 27-19 and felt lucky that the final whistle blew when it did. In the rematch the Aggies wanted a decisive win and to show that this exciting yet sometimes inconsistent team could play 80 minutes of good rugby.

The first half went exactly as planned for the Aggies. Due to great rucking by the entire side, but especially the forwards, the Aggies saw more clean ball and kept more possession than in any previous game of the year.

The Aggies lead 27-0 at halftime thanks to five tries, with only one conversion being made. The first try of the match was a great one as wing Tyler Harrison took a pass thirty yards from the goal line and beat three or four Reno defenders along the sideline to take it all the way himself. Harrison added another try later in the half off of another incredible individual effort.

The Aggie backline showed good form because of the many opportunities it received. All of the backs got touches and were able to do good things with it. Center Jake Mayers scored the second try off of a short run that was a result of long phase play by Davis.

There were points when Reno threatened in the first half but the Aggie defense always held strong and forced turnovers at important times. Scrumhalf John Parshall intercepted a pass in the Aggies defensive zone and ran 80 meters the other way for the try. This was the play of the game and surprised every one of the Aggies home fans due to Parshall
