Karate
KARATE is a dynamic Japanese martial art which develops the entire potential of the human body and mind. It is weapon-less by definition since the literal meaning of Karate is "Empty Hand." Its practice can serve as physical exercise or as self-defense. But in its highest meaning, Karate is discipline of the Mind through rigorous training of the Body to achieve perfection of form.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA DAVIS J.K.A. KARATE CLUB
Basic Description
J.K.A. Shotokan Karate-do is an empty-hand art of self-defense, but in it's highest meaning, it is a discipline of the mind through hard training of the body to achieve perfection of form.
The U.C.Davis J.K.A. Shotokan Karate Club is a martial arts club dedicated to the improvement of self. This is accomplished by fostering a spirit of respect for others and humility through strenuous physical training and strict adherence to the dojo kun (training hall First Order of Merit). The dojo kun consists of the following goals: 1) seek perfection of character, 2) be faithful, 3) endeavor, 4) respect others, and 5) refrain from violent behavior. This club is open to all those willing to strive for self-improvement.
The purpose of the U.C.Daivs J.K.A. Shotokan Karate Club is to promote spiritual and physical well-being through the mastering of the self. The mastering of the self provides the basis for effective self-defense, and elevated sense of self-esteem, and a fundamental respect for others.

MASTER FUNAKOSHI & SHOTOKAN KARATE
The Father of modern Karate, Master Gichin Funakoshi, was born in Okinawa in 1868. Funakoshi began training when he was eleven years old. He introduced Karate to Japan in 1917 and 1922 at physical education expositions sponsored by the Ministry of Education.
In 1936, Master Funakoshi founded in Tokyo the Shotokan Dojo (school) -- so named because Shoto was Funakoshi's pen name.

THE JAPAN KARATE ASSOCIATION (JKA)
In 1949, the Japan Karate Association was established, with funakoshi as the chief instructor, to advance Shotokan Karate.
Since that time, Shotokan Karate has exploded in popularity, with tens of thousands of dedicated students worldwide. To reflect its global stature, the JKA has become JKA International -- of which JKA Karate of California is a proud member.
