Ben Dines: All Time Goal Scoring Leader*
While it happened before this weekend, it was not made aware until
now. Ben Dines surpassed Andrew Le with his 42 career goal! As Ben Dines
has two more games until his ACHA D3 eligibility runs out, he looks to
tack on more goals and attempts to put the record a little farther away
from anyone else. It most be noted though that many years of statistics
are missing, and alumni have informed us that Dave Renz is probably the
all time goal scoring leader. However, congrats to Ben Dines!
11/10/08: Aggies lose to CSUN 8-4; Suffer
heartbreaking defeat to Fresno State 3-2.
After driving 6 hours down Interstate 5, the Aggies came out flat
footed against the talented Northridge team, giving up a 4 goal deficit
before Ben Dines scored to get the Aggies on the board. The 2nd period
featured the same score differential, with alternate captain Keisuke
Teeple netting the Aggies lone goal. The 3rd period started off with an
Aggie power play, the result of a late penalty in the 2nd period to
Northridge. Teeple lit the lamp once again just 13 seconds into the
period, closing the gap to 8-3. Alternate captain Alex Sloan scored
midway through the 3rd period and the game ended 8-4, which featured a
spirited battle between both teams, including many hits and goals
(although mostly Northridge goals).
The next day, after driving 3 hours up Highway 99,
the Aggies played Fresno State to a stalemate until 5 minutes into the
2nd period when the Bulldogs put in a goal. The game would remain this
way for another 20 minutes when Fresno State tallied another goal to
create a two goal lead. Ben Dines scored a huge power play goal with
about 8 minutes left to cut the deficit to one, but Fresno State scored
their own power play goal just two minutes later. Shortly thereafter, a
scrum ensued in front of the Bulldog netminder and the Aggies found
themselves on a power play. Keisuke Teeple was able to convert with two
minutes remaining in the game, however the Aggies could not tally
another goal and lose the game 3-2.
Notes: Keisuke Teeple led all Aggies with 3 goals on the
year...The Aggies played against CSU Northridge with only 10
skaters...Jon Drinnan made 40 saves in the CSUN loss...3 more skaters
magically appeared for the Fresno State game...Nick Stromberg played his
first game in a while...Patrick Langham is out indefinitely with an
upper body injury...The return of Eric Wulfemeyer seems close...Joaquin
Rodriguez is out for the year due to personal reasons...
10/19/08: Aggies win close game in
overtime against Gonzaga! Aggies then lose to College of the Canyons
-After killing a 5 on 3 in overtime, the Aggies clear the puck up to
Alex Sloan, who had just stepped out of the penalty box, who slips a
breakaway pass to Keisuke Teeple for a shorthanded game winning goal!
Aggies win 5-4
-The next night, the Aggies were handed a defeat by a score of 7-2 to
COC. A much improved team this year, COC showed some depth and a lot of
skill, often rolling all 4 lines. The Aggies played short handed,
missing Eric Wulfemeyer (again), Stephen Gribble, and Calvin Chu.
Notes: Bink (aka James Hinkle) scored two goals against Gonzaga...Greg
DePalma scored a goal against his former team (COC)...DePalma played for
COC the last two seasons...Head Coach Nick Rood took a minor for
unsportsmanlike, joining Firrend Naaman as coaches who have been
penalized...Joaquin Rodriguez was seen hunched over a trash can during
the COC game...
10/12/08: Aggies win first game of the year!
(Game recap comes from Coach Le's blog)
"I was just as nervous before this game as I was nervous for any 1st
game of the season...this was my 1st game coaching UC Davis because
Coach Rood was out of town. Before the game, I was already dealt a bad
hand when Joaquin and Wulfy weren't going to suit up. Obviously, the
game plan was to run lines 1, 2, 3 so everyone got ample rest. So what a
better way to calm my nerves and implement that plan than to have to
kill a 5 on 3 just minutes into the game! Sloan and Eddie sat in the
box, while Nate was hurt, leaving me Stromberg (only defenseman left) on
the ice with two forwards. (Penalties were the story of the night...) We
soon killed it off and after 1 period, we were up 2-0. One of the goals,
Captain Birnbaum completely dangled the goalie. The few UC Davis fans in
attendance were in awe (and by the way, I feel like the competed well
against the SCU fans). The 2nd period was hard fought, as both teams
mustered 1 goal each to make it a 3-1 game. Heading into the 3rd period,
I was hoping that the boys would ice the game with another goal. My
wishes never came true as SCU scored two goals in about the 1st 5
minutes or so. 3-3 dead even game. With about 12 minutes left in the
game, the bench shortened to 2 lines. At about the 4 minute left mark,
SCU has full control in our zone. Keisuke decides to be sneaky and
cherry pick, while the SCU defensemen either didn't know he was behind
them, or didn't care. A SCU forward tries to pass to his pointman...but
misses and the puck goes straight to Keisuke! Breakaway goal. Then we
ice the game with another goal and the team won their (and my) first
game of the year."
Notes: Nick Stromberg and Nate Clough absolutely wrecked some
players out there...Greg was pushed into the goalie, yet was sent to the
box...The big guns all scored: Greg with 2, Keisuke, and Dines...Firrend
Naaman took a bench minor for unsportsmanlike conduct.
10/5/08: Aggies suffer loss in season opener
-Penalty trouble in the 1st period gave way to a CSUN 6-1 lead.
Sophomore Alex Sloan scored the Aggies first goal of the season while
short handed. CSUN's Chris Gale had a hat trick in the period, en route
to a 5 goal game. The teams alternated parades to the penalty box in the
1st and 2nd periods, with the Aggies taking every penalty in the 1st,
while CSUN took the majority of the calls in the 2nd. After CSUN mounted
a 9-1 lead, starter (and reining team MVP) Jon Drinnan was pulled in
favor of Angelo Arias. The Aggies showed some life afterwards by putting
up 4 straight goals to bring the game to a 9-5 deficit. CSUN scored one
more time in the 3rd period to end the game 10-5.
Notes: Aggies rookies Greg Depalma and James Hinkle scored their
first ever goals...Hinkle's was on a penalty shot...Due to injury,
Spenser Wagner played defense for most of the game, a position he hadn't
played full time since his freshman year...
