UC Davis

Dressage Team

The UC Davis Dressage Team was started in 1996 in order to provide a forum for riders who did not jump or ride western. Since that time the team has grown in membership from 6 members to approximately 30 members and is still growing. Team members are involved in a variety of activities. Members participate in weekly lessons with Dressage Team Coach Linda Varnum. The UCD Dressage Team also hosts numerous clinics. Some clinicians that attend are Susan Hoffman-Peacock, who recently won the Anders Lindgren Scholarship, is a USDF Fourth Level Certified instructor, and is traveling to Europe to ride with Olympian, Conrad Schumaker. Another is Margot Barron, a Grand Prix rider and a favorite of the Dressage Team. The team also hosts an annual schooling show for the community and the team.

In 2002, after much hard work, organization, and dedication by Maggie Campbell and other UC Davis team members, the Interscholastic Dressage Association (IDA) has been brought to California. Two of the teams' members, Maggie Campbell and Lauren Weber, flew back east in February to Mount Holyoke College to view an IDA intercollegiate competition. They returned with the details required to host an intercollegiate show. A mock IDA show was held in April to test the format and it was quite the success. Four schools participated, California Polytechnic University, San Luis
Obispo, California State University, Fresno, Stanford University, and the University of California, Davis. Everyone left the show excited and enthusiastic about IDA and there are plans to hold four IDA shows during the 2002-2003 school year. Congratulations are in order to the UC Davis Dressage Team for setting the vision and attaining the goal of getting IDA started on the west coast. Well done, Team!

Anyone interested in joining the Team must be able to walk, trot, and canter proficiently but do not need prior dressage experience. Evaluations for the Team are held at the beginning of each fall quarter.

At that time riders are grouped together by level of experience.  Lessons for the team are provided through the UC Davis Equestrian Center (Center). Team members may use either Center horses or their own horses for lessons. Students may also board their horses at the Center.
